Laying Up

Note: This is article 3 of 4 in the Declare, Decree, Decide series.

Many have written, taught and prophesied that we are not to “lay up” riches on this earth as though to lay up riches was unbiblical, deviating from the eternal truth of God or sacrilegious.

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21 NIV)

Jesus is reminding us of in Matthew 6:19-21 to not get your sense of value, worth and life out of anything that is accumulated on earth. Many assess their evaluation, attraction and existence measured by the accumulation of things on this earth. Jesus doesn’t have a problem of accumulation; He is steering us towards an eternal amassing. In other words, this passage is not saying that we should not “lay up” things; it is a matter of what you are laying up: eternal or temporal.

We were created for accumulation. Our hearts are designed to mount up treasures that are eternal and carry a perpetual investment that always amplifies. Heavenly investments reverberate throughout time; they are never halted by stock market crashes or mankind’s need for temporal pleasures. There is nothing wrong with investing in the stock market, bonds or other investment instruments, just don’t get your life out of the profits that may come. All of your worth, value and acceptance will run out if you are getting your life out of your 401K.

In Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus is coaching us to take the profits that these investments afford us and ask the Father what He wants us to do with them. We understand that eternal investments will never allow moth or rust to consume them. No thief can rob or break into timeless investments. God is the only one who holds the combination to His safe. Presented to God, He will place His hands on finances and unlock the eternal depository, bringing forth signs, wonders, miracles and the entirety of the Kingdom of God, advancing on earth, so eternally invest away!
