I was in South Africa recently teaching at a DTS (Discipleship Training School) for YWAM (Youth With A Mission). The topic I often teach on is “Identity in Christ” or “Who God says we are to Him” and this time of equipping was no different.
As I was saying goodbye to one of the students, I said to her, “Remember, God believes in you”.
She responded with, “Yea right, how could He believe in me?”
I run across people all over the world who have a difficult time connecting with the reality that God actually believes in them, and on top of that, He trusts us.
Let’s see if the scriptures communicate to us that God believes in us.
In Matthew 5:1-12, Jesus describes what kingdom people look like and acts like, in other words, the “Beatitudes”. But in Matthew 5:13-14 Jesus doesn’t just describe kingdom people, He makes a shift and actually begins speaking directly to them.
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Notice Jesus speaks directly to us and says, “You are”. He calls us salt and He calls us light. There is nothing to work up. He is calling us what we already are. He simply wants us to remember and agree with Him. It only makes sense that you would act like who you are.
A VALUABLE COMMODITY
Jesus is calling us the most valuable commodity on the earth. The people listening to Jesus would have been blown away to hear Jesus call them salt and light. Salt and light were both extremely valuable commodities in Jesus’ day. Nowadays we take salt and light for granted. Salt sits on our tables and with a flip of a switch we have light. Romans soldiers in Jesus’ day were paid with salt and they didn’t have utility bills. Jesus has not changed His mind about us; He still believes in you.
You cannot be hidden my friends, so rise up into who you are and you will experience “Living Lighter Today”.
QUESTION OF THE DAY
Share the revelation God is giving you right now. What is He telling you concerning you being salt and light?
