He Kept Giving Them More Law

Picture 24

Jesus delivered the law to those who were gathered at the Sermon on the Mount.

“You have heard that it was said to our people long ago, ‘You must not murder anyone.Anyone who murders another will be judged.” (Matthew 5:21)

I can just hear the religious leaders of the day saying to each other, “That’s right Jesus, you tell them! We have never murdered anyone – we are righteous, but I am sure there are those who have murdered, thus they have broken God’s law.”

Then Jesus gives them more and deeper law, He says:

But I tell you, if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be judged. (Matthew 5:22)

THE JESUS SPEAKS ABOUT ANOTHER LAW:

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You must not be guilty of adultery.”(Matthew 5:27)

I can just hear the religious leaders of the day saying to each other, “That’s right Jesus, you tell them! We have never committed adultery we are righteous, but I am sure there are those listening who have committed adultery, thus have broken God’s law.”

Then Jesus gives them more and deeper law, He says:

But I tell you that if anyone looks at a woman and wants to sin sexually with her, in his mind he has already done that sin with the woman. (Matthew 5:28)

WHY THE LAW?

Why did Jesus pronounce the law? After giving those listening the law of His Father, it was as if it was on purpose, He pauses for just a moment, allowing the religious ones to say, “That’s right Jesus, you tell them!” Then he gives them more law.

God established His law (the Mosaic Law) to show His righteousness and holiness and to reveal sin. But, God also gave us the law to break us and to let us know that we on our own could never measure up to His perfection. In other words the law of God was given to point us to the cross of Christ!

You see the law of God is holy, good and true (see Romans 7:12) and it must be fulfilled. This is why God our Father who wanted us back, sent His Son, the perfect Lamb of God.

Knowing that God had a divine purpose for His law, will lead you to “Living Lighter Today” through His Son.

QUESTION OF THE DAY:

Has God ever given you more law so that it would break you and send you to His Son?
